Tank Tracks to Rangoon: The Story of British Armour in Burma

Well I'm in my new house now, and hopefully will be actually playing a game on my new kitchen/dining table now that I have the room to leave a game set up!

Anyway, at the moment I am reading "Tank Tracks to Rangoon: The Story of British Armour in Burma" (hence the title of the post!), a fascinating book full of ideas for scenarios using my Peter Pig 14th Army figures with my Skytrex Lees.

For instance, I certainly didn't know that the Japanese had used captured Lees! Unfortunately, I've not been making notes, so I'm going to have to read it again and do that!

Vanquish '17

Well, I made it to Vanquish and here's the obligatory loot photo:

The envelope in the lower centre is my pre-order from Newline, and the box at the top was a spur-of-the-moment 10mm Anglo-Zulu war purchase ...

I did sell my Parthians on the bring'n'buy - because I put the wrong price on them ... the Sumerians didn't sell as there were fewer figures for a higher price ... d'oh!!

Changing Size

As I've decided to go to Vanquish this weekend, I have made the decision to change the size of some of my figures.

I'm taking my 6mm Sumerians & Parthians to the bring & buy there & taking advantage of Newline Designs show offer to get the same armies in 10mm.

As I have a bunch of 10mm fantasy stuff they'll then be compatible with that, along with the addition of a few monsters, Wizards, etc.

That's the cunning plan anyway!

Legionary '17

Legionary is the annual Exeter area wargames convention and as my brother was putting on a display game this year, I dragged my sorry arse out of bed on Saturday morning and made the 2hr drive to see it ...
It had a couple of competitions - I forget what games - and in the pic above you can see one of them going.

Mr brother's game was Warzone : Resurrection (IIRC!) and here are some pics of it

And finally the obligatory loot photo (the box of books was from the bring'n'buy & was £5 for the whole box!):

This week, I am mostly ...

... painting the bases of my fantasy naval ships ....

I am also planning using my Turkmenisatnia stuff to playtest some new rules I've been given which are for the Russians in Afghanistan. Probably the best named rules I've ever seen, they are called 'Hind and Seek' and seem really good. I am really looking forward to trying them out and actually playing something!

Insure your figures!

Back in this post in September last year, I rambled on about insuring wargames figures and the need to catalogue them to do that ...

Anyway, although I can't remember how I found it, this site now exists on the interweb:
Wargamer Collection Calculator
A free site to record your wargames collection. It seems to cater for only land warfare at present - no scales for aerial/naval/space gaming ...

That shouldn't in anyway detract from a hobbyist produced free site - IMO

Did I mention it was free?

FFT3 - taken the plunge ...

I've long been eyeing the modern ruleset Fistful of Tows 3 - it seems very popular with bloggers all over the place.

However, the seemingly extortionate price on Wargames Vault for it of £30.70 seemed much fairer once I read the review of the rules on the Delta Vector blog. I think this quote had the most effect on my opinion:
The bulk of the book is from the  263 pages of "army lists" - orders of battle for pretty much every country's forces at brigade/regiment scale from 1915 to the present along with vehicles, infantry and weapon details for those forces, as well as detailed rules for designing your own.  This hefty tome is probably the most comprehensive resource of its kind I have come across and would be very useful for other WW2-modern games besides FFT3.
I was also impressed by the arguments of evilleMonkeigh (the blog's author) and have visited Lulu.com to get the coil bound version for myself. At £37.88 (+ P&P) it wasn't that much more than the pdf version.

I'll post more about it when it arrives

Success!

The cunning plan that I outlined in my last post actually succeeded! I managed to extract my White Russians, VBCW, Fantasy Naval and Wars of Turkmenistania figures from the store.

So I can - hopefully! - make some progress with these projects:
  • The White Russians have half-a-dozen cavalry to finish off, along with some baggage/supply figures.
  • VBCW has a detachment of sailors and a couple of vehicles to do
  • Fantasy Naval - the ships are painted but their bases need doing
These are on top of what I already had out of the store, my battlemechs (adde 3 with eBay purchase) & some other smaller stuff ...

So time to start doing stuff I guess!!

Cunning Plan ...

As I just posted on the Wars of Turkmenistania blog, I have a cunning plan to rescue some of my toy soldiers from storage tomorrow.

The place I have my stuff is open from 10am to 4pm so I have a 6hr opportunity to get my White Russians, VBCW and maybe my Fantasy Naval stuff.

Unfortunately there are 2 things against this ...

  1. They're all right at the back of the store, behind a fridge freezer amongst other things, so it's going to be hard work - something that I am against on principle
  2. I've planned to do this for the last 3 or 4 weekends in a row, and my recent tendency to visit the pub the evening before, where my new friends force me to imbibe several pints of Guinness have led to me being ... shall we say 'unsuitable' for physical exertion the next day
I shall try my best to fight through these obstacles! :)

Moving home ...

The sale of my previous abode has been agreed for a while now and - as these things do - is trundling slowly to completion ....

I've also found a place to buy, for which my offer has been accepted!  So that'll take its own sweet time to complete ...

Unfortunately, due to a lack of realisation of how much stuff I have, all my wargames stuff is at ehe back of the storage unit I'm using - I had thought I'd be able to get to it, but all the stuff I've got means there just isn't the room to reach it ...

Oh well,  just have to wait until I'm in my new home ...

Test of Honour

Sitting in my local, I've just read the review of 'Test of Honour' in Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy #89

It certainly makes the game sound really good, and as a long time Kurasowa fan, who's just got a bonus from his former employers that he'd completely forgotten about, I think I'll be buying it tomorrow!

edited: just been to the site & the pre-order is out of stock! Might be a while before I get it then!  :)

New Rules ...

As my first payday in my new job is tomorrow, I decided to splash out on a bunch of new rules from Wargames Vault today I bought:

Fayre Winds & Foul Tydes - the fantasy supplement to Ganesha Games' Galleys & Galleons naval rules

Armoured Strike - Rory Crabb's armoured warfare battlegroup rules

Target Locked-On! - Rory Crabb's jet age aerial combat rules

So plenty of reading material for me!

Westminster .....

from this BBC Story:   http://www.bbc.uk/news/uk-39363297    is this:

"Mrs May said 12 Britons were admitted to hospital and other victims included three French children, two Romanians, four South Koreans, one German, one Pole, one Irish, one Chinese, one Italian, one American and two Greeks"

shows how incredibly diverse our capital is ...

Good News!

After 3.5 months of unemployment, I started a new job last Monday.  So far everything is good, but I've still got the normal 3 mth probation period to get through ...

Although I did get a fairly decent payout from last employer, it has been rough during this period and the depression that seems to be constantly with me got really, really bad for a time ...  Money will be an issue for a while, and I've decided that I have to sell my flat as I really couldn't afford to be paying 2 mortgages - the flat and my daughter's home (with my ex- )

I have a buyer and it seems to be moving along ok (so far!) and I've moved in with my parents until that all gets sorted & I complete my probation. At that point my cunning plan is to buy another home ..

Hardly anything has been done on the hobby front during this time ... I haven't managed to accomplish anything much.

Oh well; hopefully things will get back on track over the rest of this year ... :-)
